Preparation Methods
Bagels are ring-shaped bread products with a distinctive chewy texture and shiny crust. They’re boiled before baking, which gives them that wonderful dense interior and glossy exterior that we all love! Originating from Jewish communities in Poland, bagels have become a beloved breakfast staple across America. At Benefitiany, our bagels are crafted with traditional methods but with our own special touch of love and care
Bagels are one of the most versatile breakfast options, and knowing how to store bagels properly can extend their freshness by several days. Here’s my personal guide to keeping your bagels at their best:
- Room Temperature: Homemade bagels stay fresh for 4-7 days, while store-bought ones last up to 5 days. I recommend storing them in a paper bag away from direct sunlight. This is my go-to method for bagels, and I plan to enjoy it within a few days!
- Refrigerated: Pop them in the fridge in a zip-top bag, and they’ll stay good for up to 2 weeks (homemade) or 1 week (store-bought). Though I’ll be honest, the texture might change a bit in the fridge.
- Frozen: This is my favorite method for long-term storage! Frozen bagels can last for 3-6 months when stored properly in airtight containers or freezer bags. I always slice mine before freezing for easier thawing and toasting.
Remember to watch for any signs of spoilage, like mold or unusual odors. Trust me, nothing’s worse than biting into a bagel that’s past its prime!
Bagel bites are such a wonderful snack option! Here’s how I make them perfectly every time:
In the Oven (My Preferred Method):
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C)
- Place your bagel bites evenly on a baking sheet
- Bake for 12-14 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and melted
- For extra crispiness (which I absolutely love!), broil for an additional 1-2 minutes
- Let them cool slightly before enjoying – though I know it’s hard to wait!
In the Microwave (When You’re in a Hurry):
- Arrange 6 bagel bites on a microwave-safe plate
- Heat on high for about 1:30 minutes
- Let stand for 1 minute before serving
The oven method gives them that wonderful crispy texture, but the microwave works in a pinch when those bagel bite cravings hit suddenly!
Frozen bagels can be just as delicious as fresh ones when reheated properly! Here’s my tried-and-true method:
Thawing: Let your frozen bagel thaw at room temperature for about 30 minutes. If you’re like me and sometimes forget to plan ahead, you can skip this step, but the results are better with thawed bagels.
Oven Method (My Favorite):
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C)
Lightly sprinkle the bagel with water (this helps restore moisture!)
Bake for 10-15 minutes until warmed through and slightly crispy outside
Microwave Method (Quick Option):
Heat for 30-60 seconds on high
Note that this method gives you a softer texture, which some folks prefer
Toaster Method:
If your bagel is already thawed, simply toast it to your desired level of crispness
This is perfect for busy mornings!
The way you reheat really depends on how you like your bagel – soft and chewy or with a bit of crunch. I personally love the oven method because it brings back that fresh-baked quality!
Nutrition Information
Bagel calories can vary depending on the size and toppings you choose. A standard medium-sized bagel (about 3.5 inches in diameter) contains approximately 280 calories. When you add butter, you’re looking at an additional 100-110 calories per tablespoon of butter blend.
So a bagel with butter typically contains about 380-390 calories total. If you’re watching your calorie intake but still want that buttery goodness, I recommend using just half a tablespoon, which adds only 50-55 calories.
Different bagel varieties have slightly different calorie counts:
- Ancient Grain: 290 calories
- Everything Bagel: 280 calories
- Plain: 270 calories
Understanding bagel nutrition can help you make informed choices about your breakfast options. And remember, bagels provide energy to fuel your day – something I always remind myself when enjoying these delicious treats!
Cottage cheese bagels are a wonderful high-protein alternative to traditional recipes. Here’s my favorite recipe that I make almost weekly:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup cottage cheese (I prefer 4% fat for richness)
- 1¼ cups self-rising flour
- Salt to taste
- Optional toppings: sesame seeds, everything bagel seasoning, or poppy seeds
Steps:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C)
- Mix the self-rising flour and a pinch of salt in a bowl
- Blend the cottage cheese until smooth (this is key for the perfect texture!)
- Combine the cottage cheese with the flour mixture and knead until you have a smooth dough
- Divide the dough into 4-6 portions (depending on how big you like your bagels)
- Roll each portion into a ball, then poke a hole in the center and shape into a bagel
- Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet
- If using toppings, brush with a beaten egg and sprinkle your favorites on top
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown
- These bagels are not only delicious but also pack about 10-14g of protein per bagel! They’ve become a staple in my kitchen, and I love how simple they are to make.
High-protein bagels are perfect for fitness enthusiasts and anyone looking to increase their protein intake. Here are some options that I love:
- Ancient Grain Bagels: These typically contain about 13g of protein per bagel, making them one of the highest protein traditional options.
- Cottage Cheese Bagels: As mentioned in my recipe above, these contain 10-14g of protein per bagel.
- Greek Yogurt Bagels: Similar to cottage cheese bagels, these pack about 10g of protein each.
- Sprouted Grain Bagels: These contain approximately 11g of protein and offer additional nutritional benefits from the sprouting process.
- Protein-Fortified Commercial Bagels: Some brands now offer bagels with added protein powder, containing up to 16g of protein per bagel.
At Benefitiany, our protein bagels contain a minimum of 12g of protein per serving, which is significantly higher than the 9g found in standard bagels. We achieve this by using a special blend of high-protein flours and adding natural protein sources.
Protein bagels offer all the delicious taste of traditional bagels with added nutritional benefits. Here’s why I believe they’re a healthy choice:
- Better Macronutrient Balance: With 10-14g of protein compared to regular bagels’ 9g, they help balance your macronutrient intake.
- Increased Satiety: The higher protein content helps you feel fuller longer, which can prevent overeating later in the day – something I’ve personally experienced!
- Stable Blood Sugar: The protein helps slow down carbohydrate absorption, potentially leading to more stable blood sugar levels.
- Muscle Support: If you’re active like me, the extra protein supports muscle recovery and growth.
- Lower Carb-to-Protein Ratio: Most high-protein bagels have a better carb-to-protein ratio than traditional bagels.
That said, they’re still bagels and contain carbohydrates and calories similar to regular versions. I think of them as a more nutritionally balanced option rather than a low-calorie food. As with any food, they’re best enjoyed as part of a varied diet!
Adding protein to bagels is something I love experimenting with! Here are my favorite methods:
- Use High-Protein Flours: Incorporate almond flour, oat flour, or vital wheat gluten into your dough.
- Add Dairy Products: Mix in cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, or quark cheese to boost protein content while keeping the bagels moist.
- Include Seeds and Nuts: Add hemp seeds, chia seeds, or ground flaxseeds to the dough or as toppings.
- Mix in Protein Powder: A scoop of unflavored (or complementary flavored) protein powder can add 5-10g of protein per bagel.
- Egg Wash Plus: Instead of just using egg white for the wash, mix some into the dough itself for added protein.
When I make bagels at home, I typically use a combination of these methods. My personal favorite is the cottage cheese base with added seeds on top – it creates a perfect balance of texture and nutrition!
