Addictive holiday treat combining saltine crackers, butter toffee, and chocolate. Perfect sweet and salty dessert ready in 20 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar, packed firmly
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 12 oz chocolate chips (semi-sweet, milk, or dark)
  • Saltine crackers (about 40 crackers to cover 9×13 pan)
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F and line 9×13 inch pan with aluminum foil, leaving overhang for easy removal.
  2. Arrange saltine crackers in single layer covering entire bottom of pan, breaking crackers to fill gaps as needed.
  3. Combine butter and packed brown sugar in heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat.
  4. Stir constantly until mixture reaches rolling boil with large bubbles covering surface and golden color develops.
  5. Continue boiling for exactly 3 minutes while stirring nonstop to prevent burning.
  6. Working quickly, pour hot toffee mixture evenly over crackers and spread with wooden spoon or spatula.
  7. Place in oven immediately, reduce temperature to 350°F, and bake for 7 minutes until bubbling and golden brown.
  8. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over hot surface without returning to oven.
  9. Wait 2-3 minutes for chocolate to soften, then spread evenly with spatula, working gently.
  10. Sprinkle nuts over warm chocolate if using, then cool completely at room temperature for 2 hours.
  11. Use foil overhang to remove from pan and break into irregular pieces for serving.

Notes

  • Use heavy-bottomed saucepan to prevent hot spots and burning during toffee cooking process.
  • Timing is critical – undercooking creates sticky texture while overcooking makes bitter, hard toffee.
  • Complete cooling at room temperature maintains crispy texture better than refrigeration.
