Juicy, tender chicken breasts seasoned with a bold smoky spice rub, air-fried to golden perfection, then basted with BBQ sauce for a sticky caramelized finish. High protein, family-friendly, and no grill required.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 to 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts (thin breasts or larger breasts sliced in half horizontally)
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon onion powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 0.5 cup BBQ sauce, plus more for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 370 degrees F. Always preheat fully before adding chicken for even, consistent cooking and a golden exterior.
  2. Use thin chicken breasts or slice larger ones in half horizontally to create evenly flat pieces. Use similarly sized pieces so they finish cooking at the same time.
  3. In a small dish, combine chili powder, smoked paprika, kosher salt, onion powder, and garlic powder. Stir until evenly blended.
  4. Coat each chicken breast with olive oil on all sides. Rub the spice mixture evenly all over each piece.
  5. Place seasoned chicken in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overlap. Cook in batches if needed. Air fry for 9 minutes, then flip each breast. Cook for another 8 minutes.
  6. Brush each chicken breast generously with BBQ sauce using a pastry brush. Cook for a final 2 minutes until the sauce caramelizes and the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F.
  7. Remove from air fryer and rest for 3 to 5 minutes before slicing. Serve with additional BBQ sauce on the side.

Notes

  • Thin breasts are essential – thick uncut breasts will not cook through evenly. Always slice larger breasts in half horizontally before seasoning.
  • Add BBQ sauce only in the final 2 minutes – adding it earlier causes the sugars to burn before the chicken is fully cooked.
  • Oven method: Bake at 350 degrees F for 15 minutes, flip, bake 10 more minutes, brush with BBQ sauce, bake 5 to 10 more minutes until 165 degrees F internally.
  • Boneless chicken thighs work as a substitute for a richer, juicier result. Cook time stays similar – always verify 165 degrees F.
