These vibrant rainbow bagels are a fun and delicious twist on the classic bagel. Soft, chewy, and perfect for any colorful occasion.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water (divided into 4 portions of ½ cup each)
  • 1½ tbsp dry active yeast (divided into 4 heaping tsp portions)
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar (divided into 4 scant tsp portions)
  • 4½ cups bread flour, plus extra as needed (divided into 4 portions of 1 cup + ⅛ cup each)
  • 2 tsp salt (divided into 4 portions of ½ tsp each)
  • 4 colors food coloring

Instructions

  1. For each color, combine ½ cup warm water, 1 heaping tsp yeast, 1 scant tsp brown sugar, and 5–6 drops of food coloring. Let sit until foamy.
  2. In a bowl, combine 1 cup bread flour and ½ tsp salt. Add yeast mixture. Knead for 10 minutes. Add extra flour if needed.
  3. Cover dough to prevent drying out. Repeat for all colors.
  4. Roll each dough into flat rectangles, stack, then cut and restack.
  5. Cut into 8 strips. Twist and form bagel shapes. Place on baking sheet.
  6. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 425°F. Boil each bagel 1 minute per side.
  8. Return to baking sheet and bake 15–17 minutes.
  9. Cool for 10 minutes. Serve with your favorite spread.

Notes

  • Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
