Flaky puff pastry spirals filled with savory ham and melted cheese, baked to golden perfection. Perfect party appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 puff pastry sheet (about 250g), thawed
  • 150g (6 slices) ham, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup (100g) shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or choice)
  • 1 tablespoon mustard (optional)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • ½ teaspoon dried herbs (oregano or thyme, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out the puff pastry into a rectangle on a lightly floured surface.
  3. Spread mustard evenly over the pastry surface if using.
  4. Layer ham slices evenly over the entire surface of the pastry.
  5. Sprinkle shredded cheese on top of the ham. Add dried herbs for extra flavor if desired.
  6. Roll tightly from one long edge to the other to form a log, using gentle pressure to avoid tearing.
  7. Chill the rolled log in refrigerator for 10 minutes for cleaner cuts.
  8. Slice the log into 12 equal pieces using a sharp knife.
  9. Place pinwheels flat-side down on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  10. Brush the tops with beaten egg wash for a glossy, golden finish.
  11. Bake for 18-20 minutes, until puffed and golden brown.
  12. Cool slightly and serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

  • Keep puff pastry cold for best results. If it becomes too soft while assembling, refrigerate briefly before slicing.
  • Can assemble up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate until ready to bake. Can freeze uncooked pinwheels for up to 1 month.
  • Try different cheeses like Gruyère or Brie for variation. Add sriracha or chili flakes for spicy kick.
  • Total time includes 10-minute chill time for clean slicing.
