- 1 puff pastry sheet (about 250g), thawed
- 150g (6 slices) ham, thinly sliced
- 1 cup (100g) shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or choice)
- 1 tablespoon mustard (optional)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- ½ teaspoon dried herbs (oregano or thyme, optional)
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out the puff pastry into a rectangle on a lightly floured surface.
- Spread mustard evenly over the pastry surface if using.
- Layer ham slices evenly over the entire surface of the pastry.
- Sprinkle shredded cheese on top of the ham. Add dried herbs for extra flavor if desired.
- Roll tightly from one long edge to the other to form a log, using gentle pressure to avoid tearing.
- Chill the rolled log in refrigerator for 10 minutes for cleaner cuts.
- Slice the log into 12 equal pieces using a sharp knife.
- Place pinwheels flat-side down on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
- Brush the tops with beaten egg wash for a glossy, golden finish.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes, until puffed and golden brown.
- Cool slightly and serve warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- Keep puff pastry cold for best results. If it becomes too soft while assembling, refrigerate briefly before slicing.
- Can assemble up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate until ready to bake. Can freeze uncooked pinwheels for up to 1 month.
- Try different cheeses like Gruyère or Brie for variation. Add sriracha or chili flakes for spicy kick.
- Total time includes 10-minute chill time for clean slicing.
