Learn step by step how to make a charcuterie board, with the best tips for selecting meats, cheeses, and more, then arranging it all to look beautiful! This versatile appetizer is perfect for any gathering and requires no cooking skills.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 soft cheese (mozzarella, burrata, goat cheese, Brie, or Boursin)
  • 12 semi-soft cheeses (smoked Gouda, Jarlsberg, blue cheese, or Gorgonzola)
  • 1 semi-hard cheese (Manchego, provolone, or Comte)
  • 1 hard cheese (Asiago, aged cheddar, Irish cheddar, or Parmesan)
  • 23 cured meats (salami, prosciutto, peppered salami, soppressata, or chorizo)
  • Assorted crackers
  • Mixed nuts (cashews, candied pecans, pistachios)
  • Fresh fruit (grapes, Medjool dates, apple slices, berries)
  • Marinated olives
  • Cornichons
  • Stone ground mustard
  • Honey
  • Fig jam
  • Dark chocolate almonds

Instructions

  1. Choose your base board – select a large cheese board, slate, wooden cutting board, or serving platter that provides ample space.
  2. Place extras first by positioning small ramekins filled with olives, mustard, honey, and fig jam in different areas of the board as anchor points.
  3. Arrange cheeses by cutting some into wedges while leaving others whole, distributing them evenly across the board with varied shapes and sizes.
  4. Add cured meats by unwrapping and creating flowing ribbons around cheeses, forming trains that carry the eye across the board.
  5. Include crackers and bread by tucking them into open spaces around the board for a rustic, abundant appearance.
  6. Fill remaining spaces with fruits and nuts, allowing grapes to drape naturally and using nuts to fill smaller gaps.
  7. Add final touches with cheese knives, small spoons for spreads, and any garnishes to complete your gorgeous presentation.

Notes

  • Balance variety across cheese textures – mix soft, semi-soft, semi-hard, and hard options for best results.
  • Choose sturdy crackers that won’t overpower other flavors and can support toppings well.
  • Can be assembled up to one day ahead and wrapped in plastic wrap, remove 30 minutes before serving for optimal cheese temperature.
