Classic comfort food with tender potatoes, savory ground beef, and melted cheese baked together. Perfect for family dinners!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 45 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup beef broth or water
  • 1/4 cup milk, optional for creaminess
  • Fresh parsley for garnish, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Heat olive oil in skillet over medium heat. Cook ground beef, breaking apart, until browned (5-7 minutes). Drain excess fat.
  3. Add onion and garlic to beef, cooking 3-4 minutes until onion is soft and translucent.
  4. Spread beef mixture evenly in prepared baking dish.
  5. Arrange sliced potatoes in even layer on top of beef. Season with salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and paprika.
  6. Sprinkle cheddar and Parmesan over potatoes. Pour broth around edges. Drizzle with milk if using.
  7. Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes.
  8. Remove foil and bake additional 15-20 minutes until potatoes are tender and cheese is golden and bubbly.
  9. Let rest 5 minutes, garnish with parsley, and serve hot.

Notes

  • Slice potatoes uniformly thin for even cooking – a mandoline works perfectly.
  • Drain excess beef fat for a lighter dish.
  • Can be assembled ahead and refrigerated until ready to bake.
