Soft, buttery Christmas Spritz cookies with classic holiday flavor. Perfect for making with kids using a cookie press for fun holiday shapes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 stick margarine, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 heaping teaspoon baking powder
  • Optional gel food coloring
  • Sprinkles or sanding sugar for decorating

Instructions

  1. Cream softened butter and margarine in electric mixer until fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  2. Add sugar 1/2 cup at a time alternating with eggs, beating well after each addition.
  3. Mix in vanilla extract until evenly distributed.
  4. In separate bowl, whisk flour, salt, and baking powder. Add to butter mixture by hand, a little at a time.
  5. Chill dough for 15 minutes. Also chill ungreased cookie sheets in refrigerator.
  6. Load spritz cookie press per instructions. Adjust dough consistency if needed.
  7. Press cookies onto chilled, ungreased cookie sheets. Add sprinkles immediately.
  8. Bake at 350°F for 10-15 minutes until edges are set but not brown. Transfer to cooling racks.

Notes

  • Use combination of butter and margarine for perfect pressing texture. All butter can be too stiff.
  • Chill both dough and cookie sheets for best shape retention. Ungreased pans help dough stick properly.
  • Store in airtight container with saltine cracker to maintain crispness. Cookies freeze well for 3 months.
