Classic Apple Crumble is a warm, comforting British dessert featuring tender, cinnamon-kissed apples with a buttery, crumbly topping baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 to 8 crisp apples (such as Granny Smith or Braeburn), peeled, cored, and sliced into 1/4-inch pieces
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup rolled oats (optional)
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Peel, core, and slice apples into uniform 1/4-inch pieces (about 3 pounds total). Toss with lemon juice, brown sugar, and cinnamon until well coated.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, and oats. Add cold, diced butter and rub in with fingertips until mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
  4. Spread coated apples evenly in prepared baking dish. Sprinkle crumble mixture evenly over apples for complete coverage.
  5. Bake for 40 minutes or until topping is golden brown and apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
  6. Allow to rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • Choose crisp apple varieties like Granny Smith or Braeburn for best texture and flavor balance.
  • Keep butter cold and dice into small cubes for maximum flakiness in crumble topping.
  • Can be assembled and frozen unbaked for up to 2 months in airtight wrapping.
  • Use a 9×13-inch baking dish for optimal results.
