Quick and easy cheese bread that requires no yeast. Soft, fluffy texture with a cheesy crust, ready in just 35 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, plus more for topping
  • 1½ cups milk
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease an 8×8 inch baking dish or a 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Stir in 1 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese until it’s evenly distributed in the flour mixture.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the milk and the melted butter.
  5. Pour the wet milk mixture into the dry flour mixture. Use a spatula to stir until just combined. Do not overmix; a few small lumps are okay.
  6. Pour the batter into your prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.
  7. Sprinkle the extra shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the batter.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the cheese bread cool in the pan for at least 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For the best flavor, use good quality sharp cheddar cheese. Freshly shredded cheese melts better than pre-shredded.
  • Be careful not to overmix the batter, as this can result in a tough, dense bread. Mix only until ingredients are just combined.
  • The extra cheese on top is optional but highly recommended for a crispy, cheesy crust.
  • An 8×8 pan creates thicker, softer bread; a 9×5 loaf pan makes a taller loaf with more crust.
