Juicy bone-in chicken thighs baked with a sweet honey BBQ glaze that caramelizes into a sticky, golden crust. Simple weeknight recipe with minimal prep and big flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs (about 2 lbs)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite brand)
  • 2 tablespoons honey or brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) and line a rimmed baking sheet with foil or parchment paper.
  2. Pat chicken thighs completely dry with paper towels on all sides. This step is essential for crispy skin and proper caramelization of the glaze.
  3. Mix salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika in a small bowl. Rub chicken with olive oil then coat all over with the spice mixture, pressing gently so it adheres.
  4. Arrange chicken thighs skin-side up on the prepared baking sheet with space between each piece. Bake for 20 minutes until skin turns golden and fat begins to render.
  5. Whisk together BBQ sauce and honey (or brown sugar) in a small bowl until fully combined and smooth.
  6. Remove chicken from oven and brush a generous, even coat of the BBQ glaze over each thigh.
  7. Return to oven and bake for another 15 minutes until internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F (74 degrees C) and glaze is bubbly, sticky, and deep amber in color.
  8. Optional: Switch broiler on for 1 to 2 minutes for extra caramelization. Watch constantly to prevent burning.
  9. Let chicken rest on the pan for 5 minutes before serving so juices redistribute throughout the meat.

Notes

  • Always pat chicken completely dry before seasoning – this is the key step for crispy skin and a properly caramelized glaze.
  • For boneless thighs, reduce total bake time by 8 to 10 minutes and check internal temperature starting at the 25-minute mark.
  • Adjust honey or brown sugar to taste depending on your preferred level of sweetness in the glaze.
