A hearty and creamy potato and sausage chowder made in the air fryer with Italian sausage, tender potatoes, and heavy cream. Ready in about 45 minutes and perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and diced into uniform 1/2-inch cubes (Yukon Gold recommended)
  • 4 cups chicken broth, low-sodium preferred
  • 1 cup heavy cream (or half-and-half for a lighter version)
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Confirm your oven-safe pot fits in the basket without touching the heating element.
  2. Place the pot in the air fryer and add the Italian sausage. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until browned with no pink remaining.
  3. Add the diced onion and minced garlic. Stir to combine and cook for 3 to 4 more minutes until the onion is soft and translucent and the garlic is fragrant.
  4. Add the diced potatoes, chicken broth, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine. Potatoes should be mostly submerged in broth.
  5. Cook at 375 degrees F for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring once halfway through at the 10 to 12 minute mark, until potatoes are fork-tender.
  6. Carefully remove the pot from the air fryer using oven mitts. Stir in the heavy cream slowly until the chowder is smooth and creamy. Adjust salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Ladle into bowls, garnish with fresh parsley if desired, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Cut potatoes into uniform 1/2-inch pieces for even cooking. Yukon Gold potatoes hold their shape best in this chowder.
  • For extra spice, use hot Italian sausage. For a lighter soup, substitute half-and-half for the heavy cream.
  • To freeze, make the soup base without the cream. Freeze for up to 2 months and stir in fresh cream after reheating on the stovetop.
  • Not all air fryers are the same size. Make sure your pot fits your specific air fryer basket before starting. If it does not fit, this recipe works on the stovetop over medium heat using the same steps.
